Concept
一つの英単語を起点として、言葉から音、そしてビジュアルへ立ち上げるというオーストリア出身のデザイナーAmir Alexander Karim との協働プロジェクト。母国語の異なる二人が、一つの言葉をどのように音へ、さらに視覚へと翻訳していくことができるのかを探る試み。
A collaborative project with Austrian designer Amir Alexander Karim, built around a single English word as its point of departure. Starting from language, the process unfolds from word to sound, and from sound to visual.
This project explores how two people with different native languages translate one word into music, and then further into images.

バルセロナから東京に戻った数週間は、名残惜しさもあり、多くの現地の友人と連絡を取り合っていた。それでも数ヶ月も経つとだんだんと話題も尽きていき、時差も相まって次第に、一人また一人と、連絡の頻度が減っていった。けれど、Amirとは年齢が近かったこと、そしてお互いに音楽を演奏するという共通点もあり、不思議とやりとりは途切れなかった。
Amirは、Public Speakingをレクチャーできるほどにプレゼンテーションが上手い。言葉の選び方や話し方に自然と人を惹きつけてしまう天賦の才能があるのだけれど、彼自身もとても言葉を大事にしていて、僕の拙い英語からも、考えていることや心の奥底で感じていた複雑な感情を、丁寧に汲み取ってしまう。
そんな彼からある日、「音楽を作ってほしい」という依頼がきた。Amirが提示する一つの英単語から、ストーリーを連想して自由に音楽を作ってほしい、というものだった。その音にビジュアルデザインをつけて発表したいとのことだった。
このプロジェクトに取り組んだこともあり、不思議な友情は五年経った今もまだ続いていることをとても嬉しく思っている。
In the weeks after I returned from Barcelona to Tokyo, I stayed in close touch with many friends I had met there, reluctant to let that time go. But as the months passed, conversations slowly faded. With the time difference between us, messages became fewer and farther between — one by one.
Yet my exchange with Amir never seemed to stop. We were close in age, and we both played music, but more than that, he had a rare sensitivity to language. Amir is such a gifted speaker that he can teach public speaking, and he has a natural way of drawing people in through his choice of words and the way he talks. Even with my limited English, he would gently grasp what I was trying to express — sometimes even the complex feelings I hadn’t fully articulated myself.
One day, he asked me to create some music. His request was simple: start from a single English word, imagine a story around it, and freely compose a piece of sound. He would then add visual design to the music and present it as a finished work.
It became a way for us to stay connected, even as the distance between our lives continued to grow.
Creative Process
”Friendship（友情）”と”Sincerity（誠実さ）”という二つの単語が、Amirから提示された。それらの言葉から得られるイメージをもとに、フィールドレコーディングで録リ貯めた音を加工していく中で、僕は自分のノートに以下のようなコンセプトを書いた。
“Friendship”
Friendship is usually warm and peaceful, but before it truly begins, it can be unpredictable and make us feel unexpectedly nervous. I wanted to capture that sense of anxiety and the sound of a racing heart.
「友情」とは通常は、あたたかくて平和なものだろう。けれど、友情が芽生える前は、どうなるか予測がつかなくて、とても緊張してしまうものだ。そんな不安からくる心臓の高鳴りをイメージして、音にしてみたい。
“Sincerity”
I believe sincerity is like a single, strong thread. It sometimes asks us to admit our weaknesses and to let go of our pride. When we suppress our ego or make a fool of ourselves by trusting someone too easily, we may end up laughing at our own clumsiness. Yet that is exactly why this thread feels so beautiful — a way to return the kindness we receive, and to avoid lying to ourselves as much as possible. Keeping the thread straight is never easy, but we try to make it as graceful and strong as we can.
誠実さというのは、一本の強い糸のようなものだと思う。それは時に、自分の弱さを認め、プライドを捨てることが必要だったりする。逆に、自分のエゴを押し殺しすぎたり、誰かを手放しで信じ込んでしまったりして、自分の不器用さを笑うしかないこともよくある。
でも、だからこそ、その糸はとても美しいのだと思う。自分が誰かから受け取った優しさに報いることができるし、できるだけ自分自身に嘘をつかない生き方ができるから。その糸を常に真っ直ぐに保つのは簡単ではないけれど、僕らは多分そうやって、できるだけしなやかで強固なものにしようとしている気がする。
