Concept
バルセロナのストリートに設置されたゴミ箱の中から採集した音だけを使って、ひとつの楽曲を制作するというプロジェクト。完成させたトラックに、友人たちが歌詞とコーラスを重ねて、ラップまで入れてくれて、とても不思議な音楽が出来上がった。
This project began with a simple constraint: to create a piece of music using only sounds collected from public trash bins on the streets of Barcelona.
After the track was completed, friends added lyrics, chorus lines, and rap verses to it. What emerged was a strangely shaped piece of music that none of us could have imagined at the start.
Behind the Scenes
バルセロナで生活していた時、友人たちから「日本ってとても綺麗な国なんでしょ？」と言われることが多かったけれど、それほど「そうなんだよね」と自信を持って答えられなかった。
それは、単純に日本人の「清潔」が異なる、とかそういう類の話ではなくて、単純にバルセロナだってそんなに汚くないじゃないか、と思っていたからだ。ストリートの至る所に大小さまざまなゴミ箱があり、とても頻繁に回収されている。もちろん、街中にゴミは落ちていることもあるけれど、東京だって時間帯やエリアによっては似たようなものだし、もっと汚いことだってたくさんある。だからいつも「きっと日本に来たら、そんなに綺麗じゃないね」って失望するんじゃないかなと思っていたりした。（尚、後で思い返してみれば、僕がいた時期はCovid-19の真っ最中だったので、スペイン外から人が来ることがなかった。そういう意味では”いつものバルセロナ”よりも、だいぶ綺麗で静かだったかもしれない。）
そんな時に、デザインシンキングのレクチャーの中で「ゴミから価値を創出せよ」との課題に臨むことになった。おそらくレクチャーの趣旨から考えると、サステナビリティーやサーキュラエコノミーというテーマについて考えるための課題だったような気がするけれど、僕は真っ先にバルセロナのストリートに立ち並ぶ3色のゴミ箱の姿が思い浮かんだ。
そこで、歌の歌えるクラスメイトやラップのできるクラスメイトたちと一緒に、ゴミ箱にあるゴミから採集できる音を使って、曲を作ることにした。
While I was living in Barcelona, people often said to me, “Japan must be such a clean country, right?” But I was never fully comfortable answering yes.
It wasn’t a matter of cultural differences in what “clean” means. I simply didn’t feel that Barcelona was particularly dirty. Trash bins of all sizes were placed everywhere in the streets and emptied frequently. Of course, litter could be found here and there—but depending on the area or the time of day, Tokyo can look very similar, and sometimes even worse. I often wondered whether those friends would be disappointed if they ever visited Japan and realized it wasn’t as spotless as they imagined.
Looking back now, I should add that this was during the height of COVID-19, when very few people were coming to Spain from abroad. In that sense, the Barcelona I experienced may have been quieter and cleaner than usual.
Around that time, I was taking a design-thinking course, and one of the assignments was to “create value from waste.” The intention was probably to make us think about sustainability or the circular economy. But the first image that came to my mind was the three-colored trash bins lining the streets of Barcelona.
So I decided to make a piece of music together with classmates who could sing or rap, using only the sounds we could extract from the trash cans on the street.
Creative Process
- ゴミを潰したり、空き瓶を色々なもので叩いたりして30以上のさまざまな音を採取
- 採取した音を加工して、ベースとなるリズムトラックを作成
- トラックとラップを合わせて、尺や細かいニュアンスを調整
- 最後に、コーラスと語りを録音して完成した
- Collected more than thirty different sounds by crushing trash, hitting empty bottles with various objects, and experimenting with whatever we could find.
- Processed those recordings and built a rhythmic base track.
- Combined the track with rap, adjusting the length and fine details.
- Finally, recorded chorus parts and spoken phrases to complete the piece.
A Small Extra
※曲が完成した後にクラスメイトが悪ノリして、バルセロナの街を皆で歩きながらMusic Videoまで作った。世の中に広く公開する意味は全くないものの、ここまで読んでいただいたあなたには、ご笑覧いただくのがよいかもしれないので、限定公開でそっと下に置いておく。
The project also took an unexpected turn: some classmates, carried away by the moment, filmed a music video while walking through the streets of Barcelona together. There is no real reason to release it publicly, but since you have read this far, I have placed it below as an unlisted link, just for you.
